Maybe they completely mute the receiver and use a transmitter sidetone osc instead?

Subject: [Johnson] Johnson T-R Switch Receiver muting
Has anyone conquered the receiver muting problem with the Johnson T-R
switch? It was to be used in my Ranger/SX-100 station.
I installed the mod from the March, 2011 ER which provides a reed relay
for receiver muting when transmitting. Also, the switch grounds the
receiver antenna connection when in transmit.
What is needed is to disconnect the receiver antenna when transmitting.
I have always done this with relay based switches I've built. All the
muting relay does is to turn off external signals. The "sidetone" from
the switch is still way too powerful. The front end is still overloaded,
AVC or not, and takes a couple of seconds to recover.
Has anyone found a way to provide useful silencing of the receiver in
transmit using the Johnson switch? These switches are very popular. If
there's no solution to the muting problem, how do people live with it?
