[Johnson] Valiant production date by serial number

That could account for the missing -2 identifier, as it would make sense
from a logistical standpoint to send kits out to the assemblers. Other
companies did the same thing. Somewhere around here I have an article with
a picture of such 'piecework' being done for one of the other radio
companies.

Still no closer to an idea of when this tank was made...

Ahh.....now THAT makes a lot sense!
Could be also that later on Johnson riveted the sockets in the chassis to
make sure they weren't installed bassackards!
Thanks for that Carl....I didn't even consider it!

Its always good to seperate fact from fiction Dave!

My Viking II CDC is all screws and nuts and was never offered as a kit
model.

Johnson outsourced a lot of "factory" built to local women to do at home
with final test and repairs done at the factory.

That's the folklore.....and I believed it for decades as well.
I have a Ranger 1 with riveted sockets and it is for sure a kit.
The workmanship is SO bad I still don't understand why it works...but it
does.
Procedures might have changed but I have never seen a Johnson with screws in
all sockets.

That's what I thought too Glen--and opened my post on the Zed as a
qualifier. Thanks for the heads-up on this list.

All of the electrolytics are the original Sangamo installs--and no date code
on any of them...

There is a very easy way to tell if the Johnson transmitters were factory
built or kit built. The factory built ones have the tube sockets attached to
the chassis with rivets and the kit built ones have the tube sockets
attached to the chassis with machine screws.

According to published advertisements back in the day...I have one
here....the model number for factory assembled transmitters was 240-104-2.
Kits were 240-104.
My tx is much too nice to be a kit and it does not have the -2.
I suppose it's possible to have been a kit but if so I have never seen a kit
assembled this good.
My s/n is 307??
A few parts had 60' date stamps on them.

I have searched about, and can find no reference on determining a
manufacture year via the serial number. My 'new' rig carries a model number
of 240-104, and a serial #30798. It is factory wired and not a kit. Any
insight is appreciated!
