[Johnson] Valiant production date by serial number

I would imagine the parts sources were standardized considering they likely
bought by the thousand or more.
If your tx has the original 2 section brown cardboard and wax electrolytics
still installed....you can check them for a mfg date.
I think they had dates on them....then cut them out and replace with today's
good parts.
Last summer I rebuilt an outstanding closet classic that still had the wood
bracing inside the cabinet....this unit had never been touched and all the
lytics were wide open.

Check the meter shunts with an ohmmeter.

You can download the kit assembly manual from BAMA...this will make working
on this thing a heckova lot easier.

When you get around tuit....take a look at C37 at the top of L11.
Earlier models used 500pf.....mine is not an earlier model but it had 500pf.
Johnson was probably sweeping the floor when mine was mfgd.
I changed it to 2000pf to conform to the later schematic. This gives more
efficiency and more power out.
It's an easy mod.

Oh...and find a set of 3B28's and toss the 866's.
Don't change to solid state.

I suggest going to the AM Forum and look over the non-radical mods and
improvements....there are several that are a must do such as the "Chernobyl"
resistor.

Dave, it looks like our rigs were not too far apart in production--as both
bear the 307xx sequence. Mine does not have the -2 either, and I can
confidently say based upon 30 years of bench experience that this one was
not assembled at home. Along with the immaculate soldering, additive lacing
on the harness, and component lead alignment, there are too many consistent
flourishes that scream 'assembly station'.

Nothing in this box seems to have a date code on it. The tubes are a dukes
mixture of original Johnson (RCA), GE, Mil surplus, and "unknown". One of
the 866A rectifiers is a WWII Navy pull...

Did Johnson source their components from the same manufacturer's throughout
the 10 year production run? On this one the caps are all Sangamo or
Allen-Bradley.

According to published advertisements back in the day...I have one
here....the model number for factory assembled transmitters was 240-104-2.
Kits were 240-104.
My tx is much too nice to be a kit and it does not have the -2.
I suppose it's possible to have been a kit but if so I have never seen a kit
assembled this good.
My s/n is 307??
A few parts had 60' date stamps on them.

I have searched about, and can find no reference on determining a
manufacture year via the serial number. My 'new' rig carries a model number
of 240-104, and a serial #30798. It is factory wired and not a kit. Any
insight is appreciated!
