Sorry to hear about the drive control problems.  I have  unfinished business
with a Ranger (I) and DX-100 that are leering at me daring me to touch them.
If you listen carefully, you can even hear the drive controls and caps
laughing.  ;-)

 

Coupla Q's.  I, too, would love to know what you have up your sleeve to
replace drive control pots in these rascals.   So, if you would, please send
me your secret weapon file, also.

 

Also, which audio filter produced the results you described.  I've tried a
few with disappointing results..maybe it's the (blush) operator???!!
