[Johnson] Ranger 1 with no grid current

As I posted on QRZ.com, check the meter switch.  It may need cleaning, it may be mis-wired, it may have a broken wire, it may have a bad contact.  I am not saying that this "is" the problem.  However, the symptoms of a high grid current reading could definitely be caused by a problem with the meter switch.
