So now,

I hooked up station controls for antenna changeover, etc and tried to
operate the Johnson on the air. The VFO changes frequency between "Zero"
and operate. It also changes frequency (even more) when adjusting the
tuning and loading. Now I'm looking into a full recap and checking each
and every resistor. With every new effort the old radio improves. The
beat goes on..
