If you are a fussy restorer, get some antique knitting needles of the  
right size and made of natural material (whale bone, maybe? I don't  
know).  Cut to length on a little lathe, round the ends as original,  
and cement into place.  The patina and coloration of the knitting  
needles will be very right,
