[Johnson] RANGER II VFO LEAKING

After restoring my Ranger II and installing a PTT Circuit, I notice that there is a low level heterodyne on the receiver operating frequency when I release the PTT. This is not as clean as the VFO frequency but is not all that distorted either.
This tone is noted on 80M only and not on any crystal frequency. Checking the archives and some notes that I have been keeping, I note that a similiar problem was reported back in 2000 by one WB6ORZ. This writer said it sounded like an RTTY Signal. The problem was found to be C15 in the tuned tank circuit of the VFO.
Now, I have experienced the joy of completely removing the VFO enclosure and don't wish to experience this again if there is a possibility that the problem is external to the VFO. Has anyone else experienced this problem and was C15 the problem?
All help graciously accepted.
Harold
