Joe,

You can get a free copy of the assembly manual on the Bama website:
http://bama.sbc.edu/johnson.htm and you will also need to download a
viewer for Deja Vu files if you don't have one already.

I have a Viking 2 and a couple of Viking 1's in my collection of Johnson
gear and I am pretty familiar with the repair and operation of them so
feel free to ask for any help on problems, the help is also free :)

To get you started, a common failure is from arcing due to carbon tracks
on the 5R4 rectifier tube sockets so be sure and make sure those and the
tube bases are clean before you start. \

The HV capacitor is an oil type and should be fine. You should replace
all of the electrolytic capacitors (B+, bias, and cathode bypass types)
as all are likely to be in need of replacement by now and they can lead
to significant collateral damage if they fail, particularly the bias
filter caps.

Be very careful when adjusting the tap on R-13 as the fine wire on this
resistor is very fragile. You can still find suitable substitutes but
they are very expensive.

New replacements for R-25 (25K 4 watt) are more difficult to find if
needed but this can be replaced by a small pot and a transistor if
necessary. The basic circuit idea can be found here:
http://www.amwindow.org/tech/htm/drivepot.htm

Good luck with your Viking 2, it (along with the Viking 1) are probably
the most rugged and reliable transmitters produced by E.F. Johnson.
