[Johnson] Ranger problem

Check the position of the "slider" on the screen voltage adjusting resistor. Move it one way or the other and see what happens to the plate current. Of course turn off the transmitter and discharge the filter capacitors before getting anywhere near this adjustment. This controls the clamp tube and the position of the slider may have moved in transit or it could have been mis adjusted by the previous owner.

I've just received a nice Ranger I. It has a problem as follows: I tune up successfully on phone. I close the key and switch to CW. All OK so far - normal readings, good output, etc. I open the key and BAM! the plate meter instantly pins HARD! The manual suggests there is likely a problem with the clamper tube (6AQ5) or its circuitry.

I checked the tube and it seems good. I checked all the components I could get to (mainly resisters) and they check out OK. I checked the screen resister - its OK.

I have ordered a new 6146 and a new 6AQ5 just to see if that might fix the problem.
