I don't have a meter but I advise anyone with an Adventurer or Navigator to 
take the meter out of the plate circuit and place it in the cathode 
circuit. This a very common problem. The flimsy slide switch breaks down to 
ground and wipes the meter out. Placing it in the cathode prevents this. I 
really can't understand why Johnson used this approach.

Also, as I recall, this is a 10 mA Shurite meter. The guts from most 
Shurite meters, regardless of their style will fit into the case and the 
Johnson scale will attach properly to it.
