There is a good explanation of this on the internet, unfortunately 
mailman.qth.net treats the link as spam and rejects it so to get there 
do a google search for screen choke modulation and near the top of the 
results is a google books result with the title Power Vacuum Tubes 
Handbook and this provides a great explanation of the function of the 
screen choke.

Although I hate spam this anti-spam software is probably worse than the 
spam.
