[Johnson] Valiant plate & grid setting

     My Valiant seems to work very well with good reports. I am puzzled
                  about the plate and grid readings I get.
   With plate reading 340 my grid needs to be  at <1ma yielding 100 watts
                        carrier and 300 watts peak.
   With 250 on the plate the grid is a 6ma yielding 200 watts (500 peak).
   With 250+ on the plate (off the scale), the grid can be set at the 8ma
         the manual recommends yielding 225 watts and 550 on peak.
    Now, I guess my meter could be off reading the plate but then the RF
                          output is too high too.
   What problem might I be seeing here? Is it okay to run the grid at 1ma
                                  or less?
