For what it is worth, the "new" system of resistor values, and now even capacitors values, is based on tolerances and is an attempt to keep the values considering tolerance from over lapping.  Now I do admit that the really old system made things a bit easier when considering values.

500K was a standard value under the old system. I dont know what boneheaded professor came up with the current system.
