Dick -

If I understand what you are describing, when tuning the VFO in one 
direction, the output frequency increases for part of the dial travel, 
then decreases.  In that case I would suspect that the VFO tuning 
capacitor is reaching minimum (or maximum) capacitance and continuing to 
turn.  I would look for a mechanical problem, such as an improperly 
indexed tuning capacitor, or a messed up gear train or dial cord.  
That's the only thing I can visualize that would reverse the frequency 
change.
