[Johnson] Ranger CW chirp

Hi Art,
There is a keying control on the Valiant just like the Ranger, basically you
adjust it until the oscillator runs with the key open and then back it off
slightly from that position to where the oscillator stops. You may remove
some chirp by better adjustment of this control however:
1. If the chirp is only on 40 meters, this is due to RF getting into the
VFO since it is operating on the same frequency as the final on this band.
Try tightening the hardware on the VFO case.
2. several people have reported that different 6AU6 tubes in the VFO behave
differently with respect to chirp with the 6AU6WA being the best of all.
You might try different tubes to improve this.
3. Many transmitters of this vintage are likely to have some audible chirp
on 15 and 10 because of the amount of frequency multiplication to get there;
any minor chirp will be increased by a factor of 3 or 4 respectively.
Consider it as personality, something the newer rigs don't have. Or you can
buy a lot of xtals from Bry and the chirp will no longer be an issue...
4. At least it isn't as bad as the clicks from an unmodified FT-1000MP on
160. I got a couple of nasty emails the first time I operated my FT-1000MP
in a 160 CW contest, fortunately it was fairly easy to clean up.
