Hi Adrian:
It depends on the time, frequency, and conditions. I
used to use a Ranger 1 on a regular basis with a 75
meter AM group on the West Coast of California on 3870
kcs.

At times, I would be getting 10 of S-9 on the meters
of the vintage rx's of the receiving stations. At
other times, I'd get "bowled over" by the KW SSB
stations abound. After a while, I had to "step up" to
using a Valiant. 150 watts out tends to do some damage
on ether and I could reliably hold good communications
with other AM'ers on the band. Or sometimes I would
use a homebrew 3 x 811A amp to do the job (of course,
driven accordingly for the proper power out).

Sometimes 'shoes' are needed for that extra punch on
the band but in combination with good operating
skills, I think it is an unbeatable combo.
