Hi Roger,
I agree that the best approach is probably to strip down to bare metal,
paint or powdercoat, and rebuild from scratch. While the goal will be
to recreate the same voltages, using a substitute transformer shouldn't
be a problem. I'm in the same boat, and hope to get the power supply
for my 500 rebuilt one of these days. I bought it at an estate auction
where there were lots of hams present, but I got the 500 exciter for
only $65 because everyone was convinced the p/s was long gone. I was
tickled as that was a steal regardless, but I started bidding on somel
old power supply chassis because they looked like a source of
transformers and parts. I'd never seen a 500 p/s before so wouldn't
have recognized it, but sure enough one of the "parts units" was the
original 500 p/s! The handles were the clue, and while most of the iron
had been changed out the rest of the parts were intact. So my task
won't be quite as difficult, but it does make me wonder if the original
power transformers were subject to failure. Certainly worth the effort
to restore the original chassis in my opinion.
