   I can report from limited experience that the "W" version would not 
function in my particular Valiant - they were NOS JAN units - the finals 
would not resonate at all on any band.

   I then bought a set of "A"s and checked them for a rough match on my 
Weston 686-10B - they were within a few percent, so I used 'em.  I found 
in my tube stash a pair of "B"s - they checked OK so they went in the 
modulator.

   So far this combination seems to be 'working' - I'll know better when I 
get the rest of the work done on it and try and actually get on the air 
with it - very hopefully by this coming weekend.
