[Johnson] 1614's

When I first got my Ranger working several years ago, I was leery of the
1614's since I guess they were nearly fifty years old like the rest of
the rig and it just didn't sound right, so I asked for advice about
1614's on the Boatanchors at theporch reflector.

The consensus of the replies was that a 1614 is just another 6L6, so put
some kind of 6L6 in there and be happy. GB, GC, 5881, it doesn't
matter." I put some Sylvania 6L6WGB's I bought at a hamfest as 5881's
in there and have been perfectly satisfied. If one or more of them ever
goes out, I'll try some Sovtek 5881 pulls from my son's Marshall - they
should be well mellowed by now.

By the way, the EL34's draw about twice as much heater current as the
1614's or 5881's.
