Actually, I should have said that the DX-100 uses
12BY7 tubes in both the multiplier and driver stages
where the Viking II uses a 6AU6 in the multiplier
stage AND a 6AQ5 in the driver stage.
The 6AU6 definitely does not have enough power to
drive a pair of 6146 tubes. The driver in the Viking
II IS a 6AQ5. The last Viking II that I worked on had
the 6AU6 modified to use a 6AQ5, but the original
transmitter definitely had a 6AU6 in the first stage
as the crystal oscillator / VFO buffer.
I have found that not all 6AQ5 tubes work well at 28
MHz, especially since they were designed as an audio
output tube.
