[Johnson] Viking II-CDC

I picked up a Viking II-CDC at a hamfest for $30 (even had the 122 VFO & 
manual with it). Works
on CW (20 mtrs, rock-bound) but untested on AM as yet.
Have couple questions, if anyone out there if familiary with it:
1) Just what is the story behind this thing? Who was it made for?, etc. etc.
2) Anyone know if a BC-221 can be used for a VFO so as to use it on the WARC 
bands? Tried to
excite it with BC-221 into a xtal plug and seems to be insufficient drive. 
Where can I get a
schematic for a one-tube IPA to put between the 221 and the CDC?
3) Just how rare is this critter? This is the first one I've run across (in 
51 years of ham experience)
