   The RTV silicone on the VFO coupling seems to have done the trick - I 
remoted the 18K resistor and changed it to a 10W (because that's what I 
had in the parts bins) and took my sweet time re-assembling the old girl.

   After getting the VFO can back together, and replacing the 'missing' 
screws, I did a check with my freq counter: the VFO ouput, as read at the 
grids of the 6146s, is within about -1KC of the dial setting - so be it. 
It is tracking linearly according to the book, so I'm going to Leave Well 
Enough Alone.

   Just finished putting her back in the cabinet and tuned up on the load - 
everything seems "OPs Normal" as the old Air Boss might say.  Knob 
settings are a bit different (less than 2) for the Exciter and Final - but 
I had 'em off their shafts, and re-zeroed them at 'full mesh' as the book 
sez.


   Now - to wait for 80M to get a little stronger here in DM09fg, then - 
we'll see if she actually *talks*.
