All:
Decided was a good day to put the repainted cabinet
back on the Viking 2. What I did was to "feather sand"
the scratched paint, especially around the bolts holds
that hold the cabinet to the xmtr. I did that, sprayed
acid etch paint, then after some drying, followed with
black wrinkle paint. After letting that dry, I
oversprayed the cabinet with Johnson Maroon. Turns out
to be o.k. but the paint was rather soft. So, after
almost a week of letting the paint dry, I put the unit
back together. The paint is hard enough to put the
screws back into the cabinet and chassis.
I went to the local hardware store to pick up matched
s/s hardware. Anywhere the screws would make contact
with the repaint, I used nylon washers to cushion
against the twisiting action of the screws. However,
the hardest part about putting the cabinet back on the
Viking 2 is those stupid 10 internal screws that hold
the front panel to the cabinet. As one installs the
screws toward the bottom, the spaces gets tighter and
tigher to put the final bolts in. It took me about
half an hour to put the final screws in.
However, after I installed the lid and bolted it down
and put the completed unit back on the bench, it
looked absolutely great! Dee's refurbished panel with
the polished bezel, shiny knobs, and repainted cabinet
made the Viking 2 almost look like new! I'm currently
awaiting an equally good looking HQ-140 to come in the
mail and mate ip with the Viking 2 so I can get my "AM
fix" here in Michingan. While I miss the gang back on
3870 on the West Coast AM net, I'm fairly sure I'll
get along with the gang on 3885 or wherever the AM
signal gets me!
