All:
A few months ago, I traded a Ranger for a Viking II
and a 122 VFO in like condition. In anticipation of
the incoming Viking II, I purchased a refurbed front
panel from Dee. Ditto for the 122.
So, here's the scoop. About two days ago, I started
work on the V2. Turns out there was a mod in the
circuit for PTT work. Not bad but it need some help.
Apparently, the jack wasn't supported on the chassis.
In fact, it had been bolted to the chassis instead. I
ended up going to the hardward store and buying two
1/4" inside dia 1" fender washers and drilling them to
fit the phone/mic jack. Then, after some repostioning
of the washer/jack combo, I got the unit to fit the
new front panel just right. Additionally, there were a
few items that need "touching up". The osc coil was
not bolted down. That was an easy fix. So was the
bolting down of the final tank assembly. That osc coil
wire to cap was also broken off so that was fixed. I
found a few other mods on the V2 but they seemed to be
pretty easy to spot. Some were "dead ends" but I think
they can serve as a basis for improving the audio ala
K6AD's circuit in ER.
The electrolytics don't need replacing 'cuz they've
been replaced. I
After the fixes, I put Dee's new front panel on. I
also polished up the dial bezel. The knobs looked fine
so I left them alone. The finished product looked much
better than the old panel. Plus, I bought a
BC221/LM-13 to convert into a VFO for WARC use. I'm
just itchin' to go on 30 meter CW. I hear it's like
going on 40 meter CW w/o the broadcast SW hassle and
heterodyne.
Well, gotta go. So far so good. Cal,N6KYR/8
