You are eventually going to have to replace the 18K
resistor and if it gets too bad it possibly will cause
damage to other components.
Actually, the VFO compartment isn't "that" hard to get
apart, just requires some time. Within the past month
I have had 2 different Ranger I units in for repair
and both required going into the VFO compartment. As
I said, not that difficult, just time consuming.
Now, you obviously have never worked on a
Hallicrafters HT-20 (the first "TVI proof" transmitter
manufactured by Hallicrafters). There are exacly 144
screws that have to be removed to get full access for
working on the transmitter. I know! I own one.
