Gentlemen: I really do appreciate the comments I received about the Viking II
and the CDC model differences. I noticed in my previous post that I omitted a
"modulation limiter" that is included in the CDC model. This time I will
quote exactly as it appears in my Johnson catalogue number 714, FORM 714M064,
p. 4 as follows: "VIKING II-CD- A deluxe JOHNSON Viking II, incorporating
push-to-talk operation, modulation limiting and additional frequency coverage
in the 2 to 4 MC range is available for Civil Defense use. Certified to FCDA
and listed in Issue No.1 of "Certified Radio Equipment", the Viking II-CD
qualifies for the matching Funds Program."
This Catalogue also lists the frequency ranges of the Viking II (standard,
non-CDC model) as follows:
Band-160 low limit 1.8 mcs; high limit 2.4 mcs.
80 low limit 2.9 mcs; high limit 4.4 mcs.
40 low limit 5.2 mcs; high limit 8.0 mcs.
20 low limit 9.8 mcs; high limit 15.0 mcs.
15 low limit 15.0 mcs; high limit 21.8 mcs.
10 low limit 21.0 mcs; high limit 30.0 mcs.
>From this information, the Viking II (standard model) will cover all the
present plus WARC bands except the 60 meter band. The Catalogue also states
that the "Output ratings of 100 watts phone and 130 watts CW were established
on the 10 meter band; efficiency on other bands is comparable." IMPORTANT,
the Catalogue also states that the Viking II is "Available for 115 volt 50/60
cycle ac operation only."(note 120 vac operation is not stated.) The
catalogue states that" Using a crystal microphone sufficient audio gain and
power are available for 100% modulation of the transmitters maximum input".
The Viking II also features "Dual Power Supplies", i.e. separate power
supplies for the transmitter and modulator. The catalogue also states"
Parasitics have been effectively suppressed, amplifier neutralization is not
required"!! I trust this information is of interest. The Viking II is really
an excellent transmitter. - 73- k4own, Sherrill W.
