Well I am on the home stretch with My Viking II. On the bench tonight I =
had it key down for over 15 minutes driving it at 230 mill's the whole =
time (into a cantenna of course). I pulled it to as high as 300 mill's =
with no trouble. All that it left to do it tweak voltage divider (R13) =
and reset the clamp adjustment and I think I will have it. It feels =
right.=20
I was beginning to think it was haunted by an SK former owner.
The problems where not really big ones but putting them all together it =
was no wonder it was blowing fuses. The big problem as many of you =
pointed out was gassy 6146's
I watch the meter climb an as it did one of the finals started to look =
like a 866. All of my 6146's where bad so I dumped them and used a pair =
of 6146B's I had which I know are good. I found C8's connection to the =
chassis was badly corroded, you wouldn't know it looking at it but I =
took the nut off and it was ugly. The last problem was with the roller =
inductor. As I was tuning the unit up, I
noticed a streamer of smoke coming up from the top side. I found out =
the front slip contact on the spindle was shot and was arcing. I =
fashioned a new and better designed contact and now it tunes without a =
twitchy meter. If what I found on the two roller assemblies I have I'll =
bet a bunch of you out there have rollers with bad contacts they break =
in half, it still has contact but it cuts into the spindle and then the =
problem starts. If your meter is nervous check this out.
The Viking I is over there leering at me like the demonic car in the=20
1977 movie "The Car" and this Viking I was owned by a SK. I'll pray the =
St. Videcon before I start on it 8^)
