Fabio, a few random thoughts:
Does it do this with ANY crystal, or just this one?
Does it work ok with the VFO?
Can you put a 7143 kHz signal from a generator signal of about 1-2 volts
into the same pins and have it work ok?
Have you tried this crystal the other set of crystal plug-in pins?
Have you tried changing the buffer/crystal osc tube?
Have you tried some DeOxit on the crystal pins and on the octal socket?

Subject: [Johnson] Valiant with xtals
Hello all,
I have just got a try with my just-arrived 7143 MHz
xtal (for 14286 MHz AM operation) but no luck...
I put the xtal in its socket (on n° 3 and n° 5 terminals), as stated
in the manual...
When I push the PTT It seems it goes for few milliseconds, just a
spike, then it goes down...
I will check again where the problem is, but any help will be very
appreciated, my brain is getting very poor...
