That famous Johnson maroon red with a CD decal on the front panel and on some
units I have seen, on the sides, too.
<<Was that big honkin' bottom plate ever painted?>>
They all come "naturelle" plain copper finish.
<<On AM there's an inordinate amount of what sounds like acoustal squeal
coming out of the thing>>
Replce all the paper caps in the audio section, and other areas while you are
at it. Check resistors, tubes and voltage readings before you try anything
else.
<<It needs more output, though.>>
Check it with a crystal. Your VFO may be the culpert. Also, check and make
sure that the osc. and buffer stages are doung what they are supposed to do.
Check the 6146s and grid, plate and screen voltages. Check the resistors in
the parasitic surpressors in the plate circuit. Look around and see if you
can find a Viking 122 VFO to mate with it. They sell around $50.00 US.
If your rig has that infamous fused plug, discard it, install a 3 wire cord
set and put an internal 5 amp fuse in the hot lead. You might also want to
fuse the primaries of the LV and HV trannies separately in addition.
73, Have fun, and keep one hand in your pocket.
