Greetings to all on this absolutely STUNNING June morn...!
Just thought I'd post another chapter here on the continuing saga of
"...improving my Viking II C-C transmitter". Seems that somebody, somewhere,
is ALWAYS in the process of restoring these gems---it's nice to share ideas
& to get feedback on different ideas in this regard.
Anyway, I finished re-spraying the lid & cabinet with a couple of cans of
good ol' Plasticote-brand "GM Dark Maroon". It looks VERY nice! I was
surprised at how easy the job was, & practically fool-proof (and I'm just
the fool to try & prove ANYTHING wrong! Hi Hi).
I also took advantage of the rig being out of the cabinet & all, to execute
one last audio mod--- specifically, I replaced the two 0.01 ufd. plate
bypass capacitors (C32 & C46, respectively) with a pair of 0.001 ufd. disc
ceramics. Awhile back, somebody here---and forgive me for not recalling your
name/call-sign!---suggested that the stock 0.01 ufd. pair were far too large
in value, & actually shunt some audio highs to ground...
I guess we'll wait & see the results of this change: the rig is all
buttoned-down now, & rarin' to go (I start my 3 week summer vacation
to-morrow).
On a different note, you haven't lived until you've tried to dis-assemble
those screws that retain the enclosure sides to the front panel on the V-2!
What a nightmare---both removing them, AND re-installing same. I gave up
trying to replace the second-from-the-bottom screws on both sides in
frustration...guess its strong enough without them anyway.
Lastly, does anyone reading this have a decent-looking 122 VFO front panel
that they could photo-copy for me...? That's a tall order, I know, but I'm
thinking it'd be interesting to try & make homebrew decals of the graphics &
lettering of the 122, to be used as replacement(s) for tired & worn-looking
lettering like that of my VFO. A good, clear, life-size photo copy could be
an ideal master copy for running off scads of these things...but you've
gotta have that first print to work from...!
Tnx & my very
