[Johnson] SB-10 and Valiant II

The drive from the Apache and DX-100 series for which
the SB-10 was designed is about the same as the
Valiant series, actually a little less. Years ago,
when I was in college and the power transformer went
"out" in my DX-100, I modified my Heath Cheyenne
mobile transmitter to use with the SB-10. It worked
even better than with the DX-100 because the VFO was
much more stable.

There was an article in QST back in the early 1960s on
making the SB-10 into a complete low powered
transmitter. The exciter was very low powered.

Since the Apache and DX-100 use only two 6146 tubes
and the Valiant uses three, there should be more than
enough drive. What you do is to break the connection
between the driver output and the final grids. This
is where the SB-10 needs to go. The SB-10 is capable
of about 10 watts PEP output maximum which is plenty
to drive two or three 6146s in class AB-1.

I have tried to find data on the SB-10 and it seems
like it takes an awful lot of drive to work correctly;
looks like I will need an extra driver between the
Valiant and the SB-10.
