[Johnson] 866A catastrophic failures?

I have had bad experiences with the 866 mv rectifiers. I lost the power xfmr
in my Globe King 400 due to internal arc and subsequent short circuit on the
power xfmr. They seem to be finicky, they go along and work just fine for a
few weeks and then "BANG" they arc over scaring you to death, blowing fuses
and damaging components. Then you check them out, make sure they are warmed
up and try them again. They will work for a long time and when you least
expect it they short again, even after long warm up periods. If you really
like your gear get rid of them. I prefer the 3B28's for replacements though
I also build solid state replacements for some of my stuff too.
This is my two bits, for what its worth.

Can anyone cite any catastrophic failures that occur with equipment using
866A's (merc vap recs) that's a direct result of the same? Just wanted to
know as I'm looking to retrofit a Courier with a pair of these jewels. Let
me know and thanks. Cal. N6KYR
