[Johnson] Viking Invader need some ideas

Hi Joe,

One way or another, you do want to maintain the shielding integrity on
that wire.

First, you can purchase shielded audio cable with one, two or more inner
conductors and just use that. To make it look original just strip off
the outer insulation so the shield is fully exposed. However if you do
want to remove the outer insulation, make sure it is woven shield (like
coax) , not twisted shield. Much of the audio cable is twisted and
doesn't adapt itself to having the outer insulation cover removed, plus
it just doesn't look "right".

However I've found the shielding on even woven audio cable just doesn't
look "right", the shield wires are just too "fine" looking. To make it
look more original, I've done the following on rigs that have needed it:

Obtain some good quality (99+% shield) coax cable with a flexible
(stranded) inner conductor and just use that if all you need is a single
inner conductor. The shield is "heavier" and more "robust" in appearance
than today's audio cable version. To make it look "original" strip the
outer insulation cover off the coax. If you want to replace the inner
conductor with standard hookup wire, just "bunch up" the shield at one
end and you'll be able to slid the inner coax conductor out, then slid
in a piece of hookup wire in its place. I've done this using two pieces
of hookup wire when it was a multi-center wire type conductor. I usually
do this when the original wiring was cloth covered wire. I use cloth
covered wire (AES and other suppliers) to make it almost identical to
original.

Good luck, 73, Ray W2EC
