All:
Finally got the last major installment of the Ranger 2 restoration complete. I bought some more hook up wire and heat shrink tubing to complete the SW4A wiring. The two black wires taken from the number 8 position and wound together. Next, I snipped a 5" length of #24 hookup wire, twisted and soldered those wires together, using heatshrink to insulate the new connection. Mind you (and I think I may have mentioned this in pt. 3) that the front panel had to be taken off the transmitter to accomplish this! I don't have small hands and the spacing tend to be tight.
The ends of the wires were then hooked as follows: the connection from SW4A #8 to the "moving" contact of the 3PDT relay. The disconnected and modified wires were hooked up to the N.O. contact of the same while the #6 connector was hooked to the N.C. side of the same relay circuit.
I finally put the front panel on. It is a far far cry from the old panel that once adorned my unit. It is shiny, complete, and looks great! I put on new hardware wherever I could. The final touch was using Ranger 2 knobs (from another project) that had been cleaned and polished. Of course, the Ranger 2 looks good slipped into some "new clothes" (i.e. the powdercoated cabinet). Color choice is much better (and more "correct looking" IMHO) than the older paint. The new coating looks like it was used in HP equipment and melds well with the greys of the new front panel.
My verdict: a full five thumbs up! I'm very happy with the outcome and can't wait to try it out on the air. If you haven't done such a project, you should try it! Next to building Heathkits, I have the greatest pleasure rebuilding EFJ Rangers.
