All:

I thought I'd get this project going (as I will be stationed during a mission for Uncle Sam). Since I have plenty o' time to use, I decided my first project will be a Ranger 2 to restore.

Originally, it came from another ham in LA by the name of Bob, W3TGG. It was in pretty sad cosmetic shape. Part of the cabinet was dented (and having the usual factory paint problems). It was also missing one foot. The mic connector was non-stock (a 1/4" phone plug of some sort). The nice thing, however, was it was totally complete and the inside was clean! This was also the perfect project (and what I was looking for) as I already had a spare newly powdercoated cabinet and new front panel/bezel to replace the old skins. I also had extra Ranger 2 knobs to replace the questionable looking units.

First order was to replace the easy stuff. I found that one of the previous owners had installed a 3 prong plug and a poorly installed inline fuse. Since I had a spare ELMECO 2 fuse plug, I used it (since it worked in the past for me safely, I figured "that the heck" and used it anyways). After installing it, I fired the Ranger up (silly me, I should have variac'd it) and it turned out to be just fine.

I also put transferred the sliding "rails" from the old cabinet to the new cabinet and installed new rubber feet. Finally, I squirted contact cleaner/lube one the sockets and controls.

So that's about it. Next on the list will be replacing the l.v. cap (with a 100 uF 450VDC unit) and replacing the SO-239 connector.

Cal, N6KYR

P.S. Mike, your $$$ is on the way. Sorry for the delay.
