Until I was activated for homeland defense duty, my EF Johnson Viking Ranger was almost in daily use, that is, every night participating in the 3.870 Mcs AM nets and ragchews for the West Coast. I really like my rig. It, too, was buried under some other "treasures" at a local hams house. After refreshing the Ranger up a bit, doing some cap changes, and adding a PTT relay, I enjoyed using the heavy little transmitter with various rx's such as an HQ-120, an Eddystone 840A, and finally, a Siemens Debeg E566 German Maritime receiver. During my last days at my now former QTH, I hooked it up to a homebrew triple 811 amplifier and drove the "shoes" accordingly. I enjoyed the unsolicited comments from others who really liked the sound of my audio (into a D-104, of course). Well, I had to put my Ranger back into storage but you can be sure that when I get off of this duty, I'll haul her out for some more operating.
Finally, I was able to purchase a used and badly rusted Ranger II. Luckily, the insides were very clean. I also had Dee Almquist's front panel and bezels (rescreened and repainted items). I put them on and now I have cool looking "newer" Ranger 2 in my barracks (collecting dust, unfortunately). But it was a great project to have going on. I guess I can resist fixing up Rangers.
So if you will, find yourself a nice set of extra boatanchor "ears", team it up with your new found Ranger, couple it to a D-104 and your good to go!

Viking Ranger and I like the looks of it. Is this thing worth restoring
to be used or is it outdated for actual use.
