[Johnson] What rx with your Ranger?

Ross,

Honestly, it depends on a bunch of things most of
which are entirely subjective. All do a good job of
receiving a phone signal. However, the BC348,BC312,
SX9 and HRO5 could use an external IF for keeping the
"slop bucket" out - both SSB and competing AM signals.

  I just picked up a Collins FRR33(??) ( don't quote
me here as it is still in the trunk. It is very
similar to the Hammarlund set of WWII. In my case that
is a BC779. They are rack mounted receivers with
rackmounted external power supply. These sets should
prove to be very satisfactory for phone / cw
reception. And with external IF and product detector
(CV591 for example) they would perform satifactorily
on SSB.

I also have the companion receiver to the ART13.This
is the ARR15. Autotune 10 channels. Almost useless!
Poor, poor selectivity. Very ugly radio to boot -
there is that subjectivity again....

One other receiver that I have been neglecting is a
nicely restored National RCP. Some patient soul
replaced every cotton wire with teflon wire. All the
caps and resitors were also replaced. Unbelievable
sensitivity and stability - it was a nice find.

There is also a NC240 awaiting restoration.

Finally, I have a Patterson PR-15 on its way from
CO. It is a 1937 communication receiver. I saw one at
Dayton last year but could not afford it. This showed
up and I decided not to pass it up. It and the little
SW3 on the shelf pretty much completes the 1930
communication collection with exception of an FB-7.
And I think I will live a quiet, normal life even if
one of those does not show up.

I have just about run out of room here in the house.

And the transmitter list is twice as long!

But to answer your question : for AM it is a toss up
amongst the R390, SP600 and the 51J. But just about of
them is useable. Right now my primary operating
station is the ART13 paired with a BC348.
Unfortunately the 348 lacks sufficient slectivity even
for AM phone. I will add an external IF to it -
probably the BC946 ( AM band command RX.)

One of these days I'll get around to restoring ( and
using) some of the panoramic adaptors that have been
worked into the collection - especially the 1941
Panoramic Radio Corp. It was the first thing I ever
bought at the Dayton hamvention - $5 and 16 years
ago... Oh well, one of these days.
