Just a thought here. Have you checked the loading caps? I don't own a
Valiant, but in my Viking II and my Courier Amp, I found more than one of
these that was more of a resistor than a cap. In fact, in my Courier three
were not able to handle over 50v before showing bad. They would even show up
on a Simpson 260 so the leakage was evident. When replaced, the rigs tuned
pretty much as the original manuals suggested. Mileages may vary here, but
might be worth checking.
