I acquired a Valiant II some months ago. I have now finished replacing all
the electrolytic and paper caps and checking all the tubes (one of the 6146s
had a cathode-grid short, of all things, and several are kinda weak but
otherwise OK). I now have two questions:
1. What have other folks done with regard to getting rid of the fused plug
and installing a standard 3-wire cord and plug, and a fuseholder inside the
rig? I am very interested in doing this, but I can't seem to figure a place
for the fuseholder. I have a round chassis-mounted holder, but don't see a
good spot on the rear apron to put it unless I disturb those AC chokes and
caps. I would also really like to install a connector for a standard IEC
instrument cord like everything under the sun uses nowadays, but that will
definitely take a little room. I could do all of this easily if I remove
one set of AC chokes, but I am kinda of the impression that Johnson put
those in there for a reason and I am loathe to remove them. I suppose I
cound stand the chokes up, but that's kinda ugly. Recommendations, anyone?
2. Are there other component changes I should be contemplating (this one
already has commercial solid-state replacements for the 866s so no blue glow
at night)? Design changes (I have heard about removing the clipper, and
that looks like a good thing to do, but I figured I'd get it working first
then think about doing that sort of thing)?
Thanks, all.
