Mike,

I aligned my Valiant some years ago now.. It seems to track the 
calibrations just fine.

Set low frequency point with the inductor
Set high frequency point with the capacitor.

You may get better results if you pick the "low" and "high" points about 
one quarter of the way from the end of the range.

If it still is not tracking right, the fixed capacitors may have 
drifted.  I can't remember the details of the circuit well enough to recall 
what is used though.

I trust you have gotten the VR tube and its 18 K resistor out of the VFO 
compartment.
