[Johnson] A question from A New BA operator.

In the "real old days" when Novices were limitied to 75 watts input
(remember when power was measured by input to the final, not output?) it
was common to pull one of the 6146's out of DX-100's or two of the
6146's out of the Valiant to allow the novice to operate these
transmitters (with crystals of course) at the power range they were
limited to. This was an incentive for novices to buy the high power rigs
before they were allowed to use them at thier full capability. Then when
they upgraded to General, they could just pop the tubes back in and run
normal power. Remember the DX-60? It advertised a 90 watt input, but
there was a warning that for Novice use, you had to load it so that only
75 watts was input, not 90 (as if anyone on the other end could tell the
difference between 75 and 90 watts).
Another thought, and I haven't tried this, is to load the Valiant up to
full power (330ma for AM, 450ma for CW), peak the grid then back off the
grid drive (normally 8ma) until you get the power level you want.
