I tried one with my Ameritron AL1200, and I managed to fry it.
Mine didn't deal any easier with the delay issue.
You still need a measured (though very short) time for the switch
state to settle before you apply power, or you fry the diodes and some
other stuff (which I did). And then once you've done that you need to
extend the CW bauds a bit on end to keep from ruining the weight.
The FT1000MP, etc have a rolling delay just for that purpose, but I
fried the diode switch before I had all that figured out.
Old Johnson electronic TR switch had a grid on the cathode follower
tube you could roast chickens on.
Ought to be some neat combination of the Johnson switch method and pin
diodes that would negate the weaknesses.
Quick, somebody invent something.
