There was a write up in Electric Radio magazine a few years ago tha the shunt
resistor changes.  It is just a short piece of nicrom wire between the center 
tap of the  high voltage transformer and ground.  I had the same problem with 
one of my Valiants and I shortened the nicrom wire by about 1/4 inche to 
reduce the resistance to .202 Ohm.  Needless to say your 5 Ohms is much to 
high.
