It sounds like you may be "over coupled".  Try
reducing the antenna loading and re-dip the final. 
Since the Valiant uses the fixed capacitor type of
loading you might also have had one, or more, of those
mica capacitors go bad.  That, unfortunately, occurs
more often than Valiant owners would like.  Often the
power output increases with less input current due to
the over-coupling being reduced.
