Ok..  I have some of those solly state things, and here is what I suggest:

Make up a nice little "power supply" that has a pair if 866's in it: plate 
supply of about 24 volts ac and a load of maybe 200 ma.  Then arrange to 
key the "load" with a signal tapped from the antenna coax.  Maybe a 6080 
that's biased off until the signal comes along.. make the whole thing look 
real nice.

Then when you key the transmitter, you can watch the flickering glow..It'll 
work on AM, too with the biases set just right.  No danger. Lots of purple 
glow. You could even put it under a glass dome like the Moth high end audio 
amplifier.
