[Johnson] 866 / Solid state rectifiers

Hi:
I tend to disagree with the 3B28's substitution. I know many who will
disagree on this but that's fine. This is what this forum is all
about.
There have been some problems associated with the gas tubes (866's).
I understand that. I also have seen the 5v tap burnt out on some of
these Valiants or had reports of this happening. Subsequently, I
changed out the 3B28's on a Valiant II with the s/s 866's. Quite
frankly, the change from tube to s/s diode makes sense. You unload
the power transformer of 5 volts times whatever current it takes to
run two 3B28's on that filament not to mention that h.v. path the
3B28 is running. This is not to say many have run the 3B28's without
fail for many years and get irritated with my assertion. Bottom line
is: YMMV. I just chose the "preemptive strike" approach to prevent a
failure my xfmr.
IMHO
Cal, N6KYR.
