[Johnson] Ranger Drive

Gang,

I've been off the list for a while because I was mad at my Ranger, so if
this is a boring, oft-asked question, please forgive me.

My Ranger has low drive on 80 meters, peaking at only 1-1 1/2 ma. From all
indications, the driver/multiplier stage just won't tune to resonance on 80
meter frequencies. The "Drive" control has a peak in it, just like the
"Buffer" control, rather than just increasing drive until you run out of
rotation like on other bands. Continuity checks on the coil and switch
don't show any problems. I've replaced most of the caps in the buffer and
multiplier stages. The electrolytics and paper caps were replaced a while
back. 160 meters and all other bands are fine. Buffer current is lower for
160/80 than the other bands, but since 160 works fine, it's hard to see that
this matters. OSC output is consistent across all the bands.

I think I've checked all the obvious things. Of course what is obvious to
someone else I may have missed altogether.
