They were both built to Collins specs and are essentially alike, both are
excellent radios and a lot more valuable than the R-390A.

Hello Dutch,

I just came from your site.. Really nice Collins equipment! I have a
question for you, I am a new owner of the collins S-line, and really
starting to enjoy. I have a Motorola R-390 which I have had for years. What
are the difference's between the Collins and the Motorola R-390?

Cheers!
Jim K7QI

My apologies for sending this to the complete list, I must have punched the
wrong button.
Being a ham since I was 12 I am familiar with the rules, I guess it was a
good thing I held back the urge to say what was really on my mind????

Remember that under the present 1500 PEP watts output
maximum allowed power under CFR47 Part 97 regulations,
the maximum carrier power output that you can run with
100% modulation is 375 watts (PEP on AM equals times
four carrier power). Thus, anything that runs over
500 to 600 watts input will be illegal. This is a far
cry from the "old" days when you could run 1000 watts
DC plate input which would result in from 600 to 700
watts output or 2400 to 2800 watts PEP.
