Guys,

Back in 2007, I wrote a series of articles for Electric Radio magazine describing the 1938 line of National Transmitters. You might be interested in looking them up if you have copies of ER, or you could see if ER has back issues available, or I could scan them for you from my copies. They include the following.

"The 1938 National Transmitters, Part 1," ER #218, July 2007. An introduction the series and detailed information on the NTE exciters. There appear to have been probably four versions of the NTE. The NTE-A has 5 watts RF output on 80, 20, 10 and 5 meters, and an audio "preamplifier" delivering 10 watts intended to drive a higher power modulator, and an internal power supply. The NTE-B has 5 watts RF output on 80, 40, 20 and 10 meters and the audio preamp and power supply. They also advertised an NTE-C, an 80 to 10 meter RF exciter without the audio stages. And Mort Jones, W6KLJ, who had acquired and restored Jim Millen's personal NC-600 transmitter reported it as having the 80, 20, 10 and 5 meter version without the audio stages.

"The 1938 National Transmitters, Part 2, the NTX-30," ER #219, August 2007. Covers my NTX-30 transmitter.

"The 1938 National Transmitters, Part 3, the NSA Speech Amplifier," ER #220, September 2007. Covers the NSA speech amplifier.

"The 1938 National Transmitters, Part 4, the NSM Speech Modulator," ER #221, October 2007. Covers my NSM, the companion modulator for the NTX-30.

"The 1938 National Transmitters, Part 5, the NC-600 Transmitter," ER #222, November 2007. Covers Mort Jones' restoration of Jim Millen's personal NC-600 Transmitter.

My NTX-30 and NSM are part of my on-the-air shack, and along with HRO L-175 they are doing a swell job.

Jim Hanlon, W8KGI

A while back I acquired an NTX-30 transmitter. From what I can tell, it's a close cousin to the NTE exciter. Any significant differences I may not be aware of?

About thirty years ago I acquired most of the units for a National 600 Watt transmitter. The exceptions were the RF amplifier and the NTE-B exciter. It took ten years to find and obtain the RF amplifier and fifteen or more to find and obtain the NTE-B exciter. So now I have the entire complement. In thirty years I have only heard of one other in existence and that’s the one on eBay. I hope to restore each piece (not a big job) and get it on the air but I’m slowing down so I could be talked out of it.
